October on the Sea of Cortez

My cousin asked us the other day, "What's the best time of year to go to Puerto Penasco?" There was no hesitation in our answer...October!!

We LOVE October in Rocky Point! The humidity feels back to "normal" after the hot, sticky summer months and the sea water is still warm (about 80°F) and beautiful for swimming. By the second half of October, high temperatures are around 85°F and lows are around 60°F, perfect for dining outside for any meal! Tonight, we had a beautiful walk on the beach under the full moon. It was gorgeous!

While many Arizona elementary and high schools take a week off for fall break, and Rocky Point is a popular destination, the number of vacationers wanes significantly compared to the busy spring and summer months. Another difference...October is family time in Rocky Point! We love seeing all the kids playing in the beach and exploring the tide pools! By the end of October, things really slow down, and many of the beach vendors move to destinations further south in Mexico.

Shrimp season is also back in full swing in October (any months with an "R" in them are considered shrimping season here!). We love seeing the lights of the shrimp boats on the horizon, where the sea meets the night sky, and watching the boats return to the port to unload their catch of the day in the mornings!

There are plenty of places in Rocky Point to buy fresh fish and shrimp. One we never hesitate to recommend is Jessy's Fish Market (find them on Facebook and in Google maps), as their product is always high quality and their scales seem to always be balanced! We've been looking forward to some fresh shrimp for months!! Yum!

Today we are on Day 1 of a 9-day trip. We're so happy to have some family joining us for a few days during our niece's Fall Break! We'll have three generations in the condo for the next four nights...a recipe for family fun!

We got an early start on our 5 1/2 hour drive today, so that we could get to Rocky Point in time for the 1:00 pm kickoff of the AZ Cardinals game. We love walking across the street to Banditos Cantina for NFL games. In addition to watching sporting events, we love their great live music (including occasional drop-ins from owner Roger Clyne, who is the lead singer for our favorite band, Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers), good food and cold drinks! Another bonus is that they are dog friendly on their patio! Since our room wasn't quite ready when we got here, it was nice to have a place that the dog could hang out with us (other than the beach, of course).

We had a great lunch and our first cocktails of the trip, before getting checked in. Our sister-in-law got the Grande Loco Bloody Mary, which was a meal in itself!!

In honor of shrimp season, I had the shrimp tacos, which are also delicious!!

So yes, dear cousin, you'll always find us in Rocky Point for a good chunk of time in October! It is the perfect month to be here! Bienvenidos!
