Scuba and Snorkel with the Seals in Rocky Point

We're down in Rocky Point (Puerto Penasco) with our business partners for a week! In May, Scott and our partners (Joel and Jill) completed the courses and got their Open Water scuba certifications by Rocky Point Scuba Dive. As they've been itching for another dive together, we booked a tour through EcoFunAdventures and Rocky Point Scuba so that the three of them could dive, and I could snorkle at Isla San Jorge ("Bird Island"), which is about 30 miles off the coast of Rocky Point. This was actually our second trip out to Bird Island on Eco Fun's boat, Sol Chaser.

Our first trip, back in December, 2021, should have been nicknamed, "Got swells?"! The ocean was so rough, the boat couldn't make landfall to pick up the other passengers from the Mayan Palace (a resort that is east of the Rocky Point port). As a result, our group had the Sol Chaser to ourselves (they typically seat about 40 passengers). When asked if we still wanted to make the trip out to Bird Island, it was a resounding YES! The cocktails and Dramamine were consumed heavily, and the 80s music was blaring as our captain expertly navigated the 9' swells and got us to the island. While we don't typically see seals and sea lions on the beaches in Rocky Point, Bird Island is literally covered with them! The water was too cold to snorkel or kayak at that time, but seeing the wildlife on the island was phenomenal!

This trip was the polar opposite! Calm weather, both the night before and the morning of our trip, meant the seas were great on the boat ride over, and the water was clear for great underwater views!! Whether you are into scuba, snorkeling, kayaking, or just siteseeing in the boat, Bird Island is fabulous!

In 1978, Isla San Jorge was designated as a Federal Wildlife Reserve. The island is an outcropping of rock formations that are home to the largest Seal and Sea Lion population in Mexico as well as several species of birds (including Brown Pelicans, Blue Footed Boobies, Swallows, Sea Gulls and many others).
This was our first time snorkeling and scuba diving with seals and it was awesome!! These puppies of the ocean were curious and friendly, and approached us all to get a better look!

To top off the trip, we saw 4 different Whale Sharks! These slow-moving, filter-feeding carpet sharks are the largest known living fish species in the world today. The largest on record was 61.7 feet, but they average 18-32 feet. One of the four we saw was smaller than that average, but the other four were in that range. I can tell you, up close, they all feel like they are 60 feet long!!

What a fabulous day! We all highly recommend Rocky Point Scuba Dive for certifications and scuba diving here in Rocky Point or on one of their wonderful trips to other locations. Lea and Nate are friendly, knowledgeable and down-to-earth people who inspire confidence in new or experienced divers! If you doubt Rocky Point's worth as a diving location, you should come try it!!

EcoFunAdventures is our go-to for fun on the water in Rocky Point! Don't miss a trip to Bird Island if you come down! It's a great way to spend the day and see lots of remarkable sea life!
